NYMR

Moors Railway secures Lottery grant to restore historical station The North Yorkshire Moors Railway has received a major boost to its development plans, with a grant of almost £1million from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

A grant of £998,000 is to be given to the 'Train of Thought' project, which aims to create a visitor and education centre at Pickering Station, including reinstating the station roof.

Over 300,000 visitors flock to the Railway every year, with the majority coming via Pickering Station, and they will soon get the chance to learn much more about the historic site.

See the full NYMR press release here.

Bill Fawcett's long-awaited history of the N&C

Bill Fawcett's long-awaited history of the N&C has just been published by the NERA: see the attached flyer. From this it is clear that it is a history of the Newcastle & Carlisle Railway up to its absorption by the NER in 1870. But knowing Bill's previous books, it will be very well worth while buying. The cost is £24.95 (NERA members £18.95). from:

Prudhoe PlusBus

TVRUG member Robert Forsythe says he has used the 601 from the station once. It has a very confusing, hard to follow, irregular timetable. This caught him out. He thought he would be taken down Castle Road where he lives. Instead on leaving Castlefields the bus turned up the hill and he found himself in Bewick Grange........Read more here

Rolling Stock. March 2008. Many members have commented about the trains on the Tyne Valley Line. We all thought and hoped that the aged Pacers were on their way to retirement. At our AGM last November Northern were keen to tell us that 158s would be cascaded down and that we would see improvements. Some 158s have appeared, but unfortunately don't seem to have made their home here and the Pacers are back. What is going on? Our Chairman Malcolm Chainey tells you what he knows about the situation in the Chairman's Blog. Relevant documents can be found in our Library.

You can now change your personal details for our member database on line. This helps us keep in touch with you - particularly by email. Please do help us by keeping your details up to date. Many thanks.

Picture an inviting railway journey set in a wide wooded valley. Salmon and Trout jump from the water, as the train glides along the valley bottom, birds call from the trees and shooting stars fly across the black night sky. Nestling in the Tyne Valley valley is the delight that is one of the best railways journeys you can take.

Unfortunately this idyllic scene is sometimes shattered by over crowded trains, old rolling stock and problems that leave passengers frustrated, demoralised and occasionally hopping mad.

TVRUG exists to campaign not only for a better service on the Tyne Valley Railway Line but also to promote its use.

Members receive regular email updates on any topical issues as well as information about meetings and exhibitions that may be of interest.

Members are invited to keep the Secretary up to date with details of issues affecting their travel on the line. Both good and not so good experiences are welcomed. Various TVRUG members are in regular contact with staff at the Train Operating Company (TOC), Northern with whom we have a good relationship.
