Railway plays its part in return journey to the 1960s

Visitors to the North York Moors can look forward to a nostalgic return to the 1960s on the weekend of June 14 & 15, when the sights, sounds and smells of a bygone age are brought together in a festival of steam, music, vehicles, costume, real ale and late night entertainment.

Steam and diesel locomotives from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway will play their part in the line-up of attractions, helping visitors to access the Moors and Coast in style. Train services will operate over the weekend between Pickering and Whitby, calling at intermediary stations, including extended evening services to support the extravaganza.

Live music from the sixties will help to put a swing in the step of visitors to Levisham, Goathland and Grosmont stations. Pickering won’t lose out either, as an evening dance will take place at the Memorial Hall on the Saturday evening. Shadows Music, Shazam, Tex, Leon & Friends, Mark Liddel and Splinter will all be making their appearances at various venues on the Moors.

Historic vehicles will also add to the occasion. Many will be on display along the railway route – with a rally of Minis visiting all the NYMR stations. Pickering will host the East Yorkshire Classic Car Club. Grosmont will host the Whitby Classic Car Club. Motorbikes and scooters from the era will be a feature at Whitby Station.   Vehicles from the popular TV series ‘Heartbeat’ and ‘The Royal’ will be on show at Goathland -otherwise known as “Aidensfield.”   Observant visitors may also spot the ‘Greengrass’ lookalike.

Throughout the weekend, real ale enthusiasts can look forward to whetting their whistle in the beer tents at Levisham and Goathland, supported by York Brewery and Wold Top Brewery respectively.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway has arranged for shuttle buses to operate between Malton and Pickering stations, in order to encourage more visitors to leave their cars at home. The provision of a shuttle bus will provide a seamless connection for those using First Transpennine Express and Northern train services via Malton. Visitors from Teesside can also access the event by rail, thanks to the Northern services linking Middlesbrough with Whitby along the Esk Valley.

Commenting on preparations for the event, NYMR General Manager, Philip Benham, said: “Once again we are looking forward to welcoming visitors to the Moors and Coast and are pulling out all the stops to work with our community neighbours and rail partners to provide a great nostalgic event. The hard work of all concerned, coupled with a return to the sights and sounds of the era will, I am sure, prove to be seductive to a great many people who remember what is was like to live and grow up in the sixties.”

Further details of the programme, train running times and special event fares can be obtained from the NYMR Customer Services helpline on 01751 472508 or through www.nymr.co.uk
